Weekend trip to Art Museum

This weekend Tim took the girls and I to the Maryhill Art Museum. It is on the way to The Dalles on the other side of the Columbia Gorge. If you have not been there it is truly amazing. I am not too much into History but I do love Art Museums. I once thought that would be my direction in career choice. I love where Art can take you, it is amazing. This museum was intended to be Sam Hill's (1857-1931) home. He was an entrepreneur who who purchased 6000 acres of land to call home. After moving his wife and kids here, his wife decided she did not like this part of the the country, so she took their two children and moved away. He eventually was talked into making this castle into an Art Museum. I don't think it actually became one until later. He was also good friends with Queen Marie of Romania who helped dedicate this museum that was still unfinished years ago. A lot of her items and other royalty items are in this museum. He also had the Stone henge built as well in honor of the men that died in World War I and II. It is about 1/2 mile down the road from the museum.

On a hilarious side note; Mylah wanted to take some pictures while we were in the museum. I told her sure you can. So she said "Mom turn around and I will take your picture with this statue." When I turned to smile I realized I was cheesing it by a man's naked butt. Mylah started to giggle and I said lets turn around on this side of the man so I am not smiling with his bootie :) Obviously I don't go to museums much because the man's package was hanging out on the other side. So for the sake of tainting Mylah I just directed her to a little bronze statue of a man fully clothed and said for the love take my picture and give the camera back. So there is some history for you. Hopefully it was not too boring.

Still trying to talk Tim into weaving me one of these. He is Aleut Indian so it should come to him naturally right?? :)

Thanks for the history lesson and fun stories! We drive right by the turnoff for that museum every time we go to Goldendale but have never stopped. It looks really interesting. . .we'll have to take the turnoff next time. Have you ever been to the planetarium in Goldendale? They have a huge telescope and you get to look through it and see whatever planets/stars are nearby at the time. Of course you have to do that at night.
